Neutral Positive: Dragonfly and stingers (RTTE 1.12)
Race to the Edge: The Next Big Sting. 1.12
Summary
Hiccup has called the dragon riders to a cliff early in the morning. Astrid, Fishlegs, Snotlout, and the twins. Toothless is also there. They're not happy to be up and are befuddled as Hiccup shows off his invention he's been working on. It's a flightsuit, the Dragonfly One, a way for the to solo fly if they're separated from their dragons. Hiccup decides to test it.
By jumping off the cliff.
He does this Repeatedly with Toothless saving his butt when it doesn't work. Toothless and Astrid both get fed up with him after a close call and Hiccup agrees to stop. For now. They then hear a distressed roar and find a young Speed Stinger on it's own. It's a nocturnal, pack dragon so it's weird.
They realize it's injured and they can't leave it to predators because it can't fly. There are shenanigans to help the Speed Stinger. The twins are delighted by Hiccup suggesting demented plans that day and want to recruit him to Loki. Ruffnut ends up getting stung and half paralyzed, because it's a young Stinger. Snotlout is very unhappy with all of this.
They eventually brace the Speed Stinger's injured leg. Hiccup then does the 'hang thing' that he's apparently known for to Fishlegs' delight, with the speed stinger pressing against his palm in a trust exercise.
They take the Speed Stinger back to the Edge, a small outpost where they're the only inhabitants. There's only brief glimpses of the next few days of helping with the Stinger, brief moments of patrol, and Hiccup sewing. Eventually Fishlegs shows off that he can get the Speed Stinger to run a course, albeit getting stung. Hiccup still thinks there's promise in actually training the Stinger. Unfortunately Ruffnut and Snotlout's arrival works up the Stinger and it goes around, stinging Ruff and Barf.
There is also definitely a vibe that Hiccup is the one in charge.
Morning comes and Fishlegs tells Hiccup about finding out the Stinger has webbed feet, allowing it to run on water. This is a pretty big deal because it proves dragons can evolve to their specific environments, since other stingers don't have that ability. Of course the stinger is asleep so they go about their day and there is more Hiccup sewing.
When it gets late, Hiccup is excited to see what Fishlegs told him, even talking about how it helped him with a project. Astrid guesses it's a Dragonfly Two and she threatens him with lock up. Unfortunately, the stinger is gone, and Hiccup realizes Snotlout and Ruffnut took him.
They pursue and see Snotlout, Hookfang, and Ruffnut have crashed. Ruffnut and Hookfang are stung, and Hiccup is very unimpressed with them both. Snotlout insists he was trying to protect them all from paralysis. Then they hear the sound of a lot of Stingers. They've come for their missing packmate.
Unfortunately the young one calls out and they're soon surrounded by the pack. Who are all very fast, and are not going to be intimidated, so all they got is drawing them away. Snotlout is feeling particularly heroic and selfless and self aware that day and grabs the young Stinger, drawing the pack away from the rest.
They take to the air to go after Snotlout and find the young Stinger has stung his own pack. He's torn between his pack and the 'pack' that saved his life. Even though he hated Snotlout, he was part of the pack, and he was to protect him.
With them in the air, they're able to herd the Stingers back to the water. The Chief is proving a little difficult, but Hiccup tricks him to the beach by baiting him and jumping off of Toothless' back with the Dragonfly Two. It works a lot better this time.
On the beach, they drive him away. The last is the young Stinger. He moves to Hiccup, looking ready to stay, Hiccup reaching out, before pulling back and telling him to go back. Much to Snotlout's own minor heartbreak. The Stinger had to go back to his pack, it was where he belonged.
It was still amazing he was willing to rebel against his Alpha for them though.
