Race to the Edge: Enemy of My Enemy. Season 3, episode 1
Summary
Hiccup's name is staticked out.
Hiccup is trying to armor up Toothless (name said) and trying to sneak out. Toothless is not impressed and not for the armor. Astrid (name said) catches him and gets on his case about him going off on a recon flight on his own, trying to find a Viggo whose in charge of Dragon Hunters. Viggo has been trying to find him for months. Astrid is worried and Hiccup finally agrees to go out with her instead of alone. She leaves to get ready.
And he leaves on his own ANYWAY.
Cue a lot of dragon flying, praising a new tail, surprise, dragon has a fake tailfin that Hiccup operates. There are tricks and it's awesome.
Then he finds a ship with a seemingly defeated crew, but it's a trap! Hiccup tries to escape and Toothless gets shot with a dragon root arrow that basically drugs him to high hell and they crash on an island. Hiccup hides Toothless, berating himself for going off along, before trying to lead the dragon hunters away from Toothless. And things get weird as dragon hunters just kind of...vanish behind him. Hunters aren't giving up, after the 'Rider' and 'Night Fury' and he wants to move Toothless somewhere better, but there are Hunters close and he's about to be captured!
Except then there's sounds of a fight and the entrance is cleared and there's Dagur. Hiccup is not happy to see Dagur. He tries to bash his face in with a rock. Dagur calls him brother and also easily gets him into a headlock, trying to get him to calm down before throwing him out of the cave to show Hiccup the hunters knocked out.
Dagur says he'll answer questions later, Hiccup has to decide to trust him for now or try to handle the hunters on his own. Hiccup agrees to trust and they help guide a drugged out Toothless away. Dagur is....very encouraging and supportive of Hiccup moving the dragon. It's Weird.
Dagur points out if he was gonna hurt them, wouldn't he have done it by now? Hiccup says he doesn't know, Dagur can be crafty, and Dagur is flattered, but also unsure if compliment??? Dagur is very much not a stable seeming individual. He moves between sudden rage faces and killer instinct and being supportive and helpful and also incredibly insecure if things are going well. He doesn't come off like a sane person the whole time.
Dagur leads them to a waterfall with a cave behind it. Hiccup almost falls to his death, but Dagur saves him. Hiccup has no idea what his life has become. But they get into the cave and there's artwork over the walls and Dagur finally explains what's up. Once he finally realized he was expendable to the Dragon Hunters and Viggo Grimborn, he was sent adrift to sea and ended up on the island. He's been alone for months and has had months of self reflection. He also asks after Heather and her dragon, who are fine.
Hiccup has no idea if he should believe this. Dagur admits he doesn't deserve a benefit of a doubt. Toothless isn't getting better, and this is the first time he's been hit by a dragonroot arrow. Night Furies might react differently. Dagur says he's seen Ryker and the Hunters make a cure for dragon root before and Hiccup agrees to get the ingredients.
Dagur explains his change of heart further. When you only care for yourself, your actions are clear, consequences don't matter. But when you care about someone else, that changes. Hiccup brings up Heather. Dagur says they're blood, which makes them close then him and Hiccup.
Who he winks at. It's unclear if Dagur sees Hiccup as a brother or is actually flirting with him, but there's certainly a strong case for the latter.
Then they run into a Changewing Dragon while getting an ingredient and Dagur drives it away with a sound instead of violence. Then the next ingredient burns to touch with bare hands, which Hiccup does, and Dagur is quick to help him, dumping his hand in the water. He's being very attentive. Dagur finally asks why Hiccup is out alone.
Hiccup doesn't want to talk about it and says Dagur isn't the only one to change after Viggo Grimborn. And Dagur says that stuff can kill him. Anger, obsession, revenge. If the risks and mistakes you make for it don't, it'll eat away at you slowly, like it did him. Hiccup is still Unsure.
Hiccup is still Unsure at the purple oleander, since blue can kill a dragon, but Dagur says nature makes a difference, like how him and Heather are different for siblings. Hiccup goes to get the flower and then they're ambushed. Dagur handedly takes care of two guys and when about to bash in someone's skull....he doesn't. Says he's changed. Then he takes an arrow for Hiccup. Hiccup then maces a guy in the stomach and drags and treats a passed out Dagur back to the cave.
Dagur is touched Hiccup helped, and Hiccup thanks him for his help. They make the cure. Toothless doesn't want to take it. Hiccup is Unsure. And Dagur says they can wait for the arrow to wear off, but they might be found before that. Dagur says Hiccup should stop being paranoid. It's a terrible existence.
And it's not him.
Hiccup gives the cure to Toothless.
Who freaks out and doesn't seem to be reacting well and passes out. Hiccup turns on Dagur, who says he didn't know, and Hiccup tackles him out of the cave and into the waterfall. They manage to get to shore and Hiccup threatens to kill Dagur, but the fight gets cut short as Hunters find them.
They want the Night Fury. They threaten to brand Hiccup's face with the Dragon Hunters symbol if he doesn't talk. Hiccup isn't, but Dagur says he'll lead them to the Night Fury. He uses the distraction to burn his ropes to get free. Hiccup urges Dagur to free him, but Dagur just apologizes to his brother since he'd slow him down and ran off on his own. Hiccup shouts after him how he's a fake and he hates him.
The Hunters let Dagur go and decide to take Hiccup back to their ship to make him talk. Hiccup stubbornly refuses to give them anything at the beach when a familiar, high pitched sound comes and there's Toothless, Dagur riding him, and they blast away the hunters, much to Hiccup's surprise.
Hiccup gets reunited with Toothless, relieved he's alive, and Dagur cuts him free. Hiccup offers him a handshake and friendly smiles. Hiccup then goes with Toothless to blast hunters off the ship and scare their leader farther onto the island before going back to the beach.
But by then, Dagur is gone. They go to look, but Toothless growls at him a bit and Hiccup admits he's right, they owe Dagur one. Plus maybe he'll get to Viggo before they do, and head back to home.
