INT. GREAT HALL - DAY
ON HICCUP
Being shoved into the dank, dimmed hall. SLAM! The massive doors rattle and echo. Stoick pushes past him. He paces against a backdrop of shadowy tapestries and carved pillars -- a legacy of heroes, all peering down in angered judgement.
STOICK
I should have known. I should have seen the signs.
HICCUP
Dad.
STOICK
We had a deal!
HICCUP
(FLUSTERED)
I know we did... but that was before... ughh, it's all so messed up.
STOICK
So everything in the ring. A trick? A lie?
He stomps toward Hiccup. Stops short and points, fighting back words.
HICCUP
I screwed up. I should have told you before now. Take this out on me, be mad at me, but please...just don't hurt Toothless.
STOICK
Turns towards Hiccup and looms over him.
The dragon? That's what you're worried about? Not the people you almost killed?!
HICCUP
He was just protecting me! He's not dangerous.
STOICK
They've killed HUNDREDS OF US!
HICCUP
And we've killed THOUSANDS OF THEM! They defend themselves, that's all!
Stoick pauses to say something, but stops short. He SNORTS and resumes pacing, repeating the cycle.
They raid us because they have to! If they don't bring enough food back, they'll be eaten themselves.
(BEAT)
There's something else on their island dad...it's a dragon like--
Stoick HUFFS.
STOICK
--Their island?
He stomps back...looming over him.
So you've been to the nest.
HICCUP
Did I say nest?
Hiccup goes silent -- he said too much.
STOICK
How did you find it?!
HICCUP
No... I didn't. Toothless did. Only a dragon can find the island.
Stoick GLARES. A moment passes, then an idea takes form on his face. His eyes flare. Hiccup watches, realizing.
Oh no. No, Dad. No. Dad. It's not what you think. You don't know what you're up against. It's like nothing you've ever seen.
Stoick stomps toward the doorway.
Dad. Please. I promise you that you can't win this one.
Hiccup chases after him, panicked.
No. Dad. No. For once in your life, WOULD YOU PLEASE JUST LISTEN TO ME?!
He grabs Stoick by the arm, trying to tug him back. Stoick throws Hiccup off of him, SWATTING him to the floor. Icy stillness. Hiccup stares back, stunned.
STOICK
You've thrown your lot in with them. You're not a Viking.
(BEAT)
You're not my son.
Stoick pushes through the door, leaving Hiccup alone, devastated.

Meaning (when the white noise stops)
So I always thought this memory was pretty terrible with the disowning. But then I really thought about it and realized exactly how terrible everything is. Most of his bad memories have some sort of silver lining to them, but this on it's own...doesn't. At all.
And what it comes down to Hiccup hasn't just been disowned, HE HAS GOTTEN A GOOD CHUNK OF ALL THE PEOPLE HE'D EVER KNOWN KILLED. Which includes three of the four people he could be said to be 'close' too. Astrid being the only one who didn't.
...sadly Rider doesn't know Astrid as anymore than the girl he has have a crush on and threatened him with an axe. So doesn't know someone he's formed a legitimate connection with is relatively safe or that there's anyone to support him.
Rider remembers Stoick going to the nest twice. Hiccup, respecting his dad ability as much as he does, didn't feel anymore than the most basic of worries that his dad wouldn't come back. He was 99% sure his dad would be back so he didn't freak out about it. And now suddenly he is convinced that whatever is there, his dad can't beat. Considering the pedestal in fighting ability Hiccup has his dad on, this is a pretty terrifying realization. He is CERTAIN Stoick will die. And then there's what he said. If they don't bring back enough food, they'll be eaten themselves.
After saying they killed thousands of dragons.
SO. SOME DRAGON CAN KEEP THOUSANDS OF DRAGONS IN LINE. For however long this war has been going. And the dragons died to steal from the vikings to keep this dragon pleased. And Toothless was wary of Hiccup because he had a knife, so vikings are pretty scary to dragons. So, in short, THIS DRAGON IS DAMN TERRIFYING TO BE WORSE THAN VIKINGS. Thousands of dragons died against vikings, but nope, keep coming because fuuuuuck, not facing this monster of a dragon.
Given what information Rider knows, this dragon is bad news. And his father is going to use Toothless to go face this dragon without even knowing what he's up against. With all the warriors of the village.
All because the one time he SHOULD have kept his mouth shut, he...couldn't.
And now no one is going to listen to him. They wouldn't before, they won't listen to a traitor now and he doesn't even know Astrid is an option.
Worst of all?
Still. Has. Both. Legs.
So all this? H-happened months ago.
Rider has been preparing himself for the worst that could logically happen. He knew things were coming to a head in his memories, where he always had his leg. So whatever happened, he survived. At worst, he was exiled. But he was alive and that means he COULD make things better and if he didn't do something so STUPID as to have Toothless near the village.... :')
So even though the cynic in him said 'it will all go wrong,' he kind of used that as a silver lining to keep doing what he's been doing. What's he's been doing since he got Obsidian's memory in Aather.
Rider wanted to make himself better. He wanted to be a stronger person. He wanted to be the person CAPABLE of making a world where Vikings and Dragons could live together, to make something as wonderful as he saw through Obsidian's eyes. When he found out he had already met Toothless, he was overjoyed. It had put him in the right direction, so maybe he COULD do this. And again, even if he was exiled...alive, he could do something, and why would he bring a dragon to the village first? Whatever might have gone wrong, Rider wanted to believe if he kept working to be a better person, then he could fix it when he got home.
Rider never thought of the possibility of the OTHER important players all being dead. And what remains of the village isn't likely to listen to the boy who got so many of their village killed.
And Rider doesn't believe in himself enough to even ponder that he went and acted like the big damn hero, especially on his own.
So it will kind of...crush him a lot. And what happens after that will probably depend a lot on others.
Mundane Skill: Tactics and strategy. (Form: Tiny Jolly Roger. Wave it.)
Surprise, surprise, Rider actually has a natural talent for something combat orientated! Just the thinking part. The more he knows about the enemy and those he has on his side, the better he is. And is pretty quick about it and to adjust. He's really good at optimizing talents and strengths of people. Changes may not be noticeable for the most part until strategies are required.
But anyone who sees Rider in any sort of sparring or a fight will notice he'll be a lot better at fighting smarter and not harder. He will also be a lot better at chess.
Whenever he decides to do that stuff again anyway.
Positive Significant: Romantic flight. (Form: Vial of green liquid. Non-shareable.)
From 1:19 to the end of this clip! As a note, this is a fandub of Astrid's voice, so that's why she sounds weird, but those are the lines. And Hiccup's line are all there except 'and now the spinning' before the useless reptile part.
And then all of that. And then it cut off after Astrid said 'All right. I admit it. This is pretty cool. It's...amazing. He's amazing." 'He' would be Toothless.
Break Down
-I am flying on Toothless in the forest and I am FULL OF ALL SORTS OF SICK, NERVOUS FEELINGS.
-And looking for someone.
-Oh, there they are.
-And getting Toothless to pick them up.
-Wow, she has a good set of lungs.
-...
-I think I'm kidnapping Astrid.
-I WILL DANGLE YOU FROM THIS TREETOP NOW.
-And make my plea.
-IT'S JUST A LITTLE LIFE THREATENING FOR THE GREATER GOOD...?
-J-just want her to listen, really, I don't even know what the fuck I'm doing.
-Toothless is not happy about this.
-Astrid won't touch me either.
-Just gotta be gentle, Toothless. I'm sure she'll love it if she just gets a bit of flight, it's cool.
-We'll just show her you're harmless and-
-NOT HELPING, TOOTHLESS.
-YOU'RE
-REALLY
-NOT
-HELPING!!!
-T-trying to get him to do calm flight paths, but NOPE, NONE OF THAT.
-Damn it, Toothless. =T
-And freaked out Astrid.
-Aaaaand Astrid is apologizing. Huh. That's...new.
-And she's scared. W-welp.
-And Toothless calms the hell down, good.
-Oh, we can go back to the original plan. NICE FLIGHT TIME.
-Astrid is less clinging.
-O-oh, yes, now she's starting to get into it.
-Definitely getting into it.
-Aaaaa, nice, peaceful feelings, and who wouldn't love flying.
-Flying for a good hour or so, with the sun setting fully.
-ALL THE PRETTY, MAGICAL THINGS.
-Nicer touch now.
-....o-oh, Astrid is hugging me and it's not desperation clinging.
-Lovely scenic route to see Berk.
-And Astrid admitting this isn't a terrible thing!
-It's actually amazing!
-And she's starting to like Toothless.
-Aaaaa, my feels, SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS.
Meaning
SURE DID KIDNAP AND NEARLY KILLED THAT GIRL I LIKE before seducing her with a dragon. And yet, didn't see a problem with this.
...that probably explains a lot, tbf.
AND AS A NOTE, for anyone going 'wait...if Toothless needs the tailfin to control his flight, how did he do all that?' No, I don't think Hiccup was conspiring to do that. Hiccup is not that good of an actor. (And commentary said to not think about it too much, but NO, I WILL.) Basically what's happening is Toothless is going for moves he doesn't NEED the tailfin for. The tailfin is a stabilizer. No tailfin, Toothless veers off to the side. He just needs the tailfin fully OUT to fly straight. Then adjustments are made to do the turns. But basically for the fly UP, Hiccup just had the tailfin out. He couldn't change the tailfin because SUDDEN VEER OFF TO THE SIDE from a straight up launch wouldn't have been anymore helpful. In fact, anytime Toothless is flapping his wings, period, he's going straight. All the other moves? It's Toothless throwing his weight, usually pulling in his wings. Since he was going for wild, it didn't matter if there was finesse. Just had to be wild to scare her. Basically, Toothless is flailing in the air and Hiccup is just trying to keep him going STRAIGHT, but nope, can't do anything when he pulls in wings. THAT'S MY STORY AND I'M STICKING TO IT.
Also, Rider is totally not afraid of heights. Or falling. Period. I AM SURE THAT WILL NEVER GIVE ANYONE A HEART ATTACK. He's just so 'SIGH =T' about all that air flailing.
BUT BEYOND THAT. This is a hugely positive memory for Rider...mostly because it's Hiccup overcoming a whole lot of bad feelings. Hiccup has this dread and sad hope feelings through here. Feelings of 'I just don't want to leave the worst memory' even though he can't name them as such. Once he get the scene BEFORE this, he will. There's just been another question about this scene which is 'why did Hiccup go after her?' Since Hiccup was planning to run away before this. And honestly? I think he still intends to throughout this scene!
Hiccup goes after Astrid because he doesn't want everyone to think he was a traitor. Him just leaving means he's a disappointment and a coward. That he could deal with. But being seen as a traitor? He couldn't. So he went after Astrid for one reason: To convince her to remain quiet. It's only after he goes to the Dragon's Nest he'll decide he needs to do what's right, but I'll go into that after he gets that memory.
So throughout, there is this sad feeling, a desperate hope, but as Astrid gets into the ride, as he sees her enjoy it, he feels relief and that hope isn't so desperate. He could leave without being outed.
Also, the girl he liked was affectionately touching him. SHUT UP, I'M A TEENAGE BOY STARVED FOR AFFECTION, I CAN'T HELP IT. But the fact this amazing girl he's had a crush on since forever was showing him positive attention because of something only he's done...it's very reaffirming. This is an amazing thing I should embrace if I could. Others can see how amazing dragons are, I just have to show them.
Which is also the really big thing. After this whole thing, it's clear Astrid understands. She understands that Toothless isn't dangerous, he's an amazing creature. Someone sees what he sees. It's not JUST HIM. Anyone could see it, they just need to see it. Even if he doesn't know how to do that, it's this idea that will plant the seeds for his plan later. It just makes everything seem to have a point.
So in the end, POSITIVE.
As for Rider's current state of mind? It's VERY good. For the simple reason of HE'S NOT COMPLETELY ALONE. Someone else knows about Toothless. Someone realizes how good and wonderful Toothless is. Part of Rider's hopeless is he couldn't see himself getting himself together on his own. He knows he's not good on his own. (Or believes it anyway.) He can't see himself doing anything without help. Which he didn't think possible. But now he knows someone DOES. Someone who is amazing.
So...maybe a little bit of hope. Just a bit, because he doesn't want to hope too much, but it's better than none. There's a chance that maybe, just maybe, the worst really was avoided.
Positive Trivial: So why didn't you? (Form: Candy bracelets of team colors. 1/9)
Sadly, one of those scenes that does have a lot of silence, but I can't find clips.
EXT. WOODS/HIDDEN COVE - DUSK
HICCUP, battered after another disastrous day in the ring. He studies the remnants of the discarded bola... revealing that he's back at the scene of the crime.
HICCUP
(MUTTERED)
So...why didn't you?
He drops the bola and presses on in the direction it flew off. He drops into a rocky crevice and follows it to an... ISOLATED COVE complete with a pristine spring pool. He scans the high stone walls...
Well this was stupid.
Then notices a single black SCALE on the ground. He crouches and picks it up, studying it. SUDDENLY, the NIGHT FURY blasts past him. Hiccup recoils, watching the massive beast struggle to climb the walls. It flaps violently, then peels away to a rough landing. The dragon is trapped. Hiccup grins, excited to see it again, and slips closer. He watches as the dragon, exhausted and frustrated, leaps into the air, beating its wings furiously. Again and again, it rolls uncontrolled and CRASHES heavily. As if remembering to snap a photo, Hiccup pulls a leather-bound book and flips past drawings of weapons to a blank page. He sketches the dragon quickly, desperate to record the image.
HICCUP
(MUTTERED)
Why don't you just...fly away?
ON HICCUP as he spots the problem. He adjusts his drawing, carefully erasing one half of the dragon's tail.
The Fury claws at the steep rock walls, trying climb out of the cove. It SLIPS and falls hard, crushing several saplings. The Fury rolls back to his feet and slowly crawls to the water's edge. He spots fish in the shallow water and snaps at them... but comes up empty. He lowers his head, looking weakened.
HICCUP
He accidentally drops the charcoal stick. It rolls off of the rock outcropping that hides him from view and bounces into the cove. TINK. TINK. TINK.
The Night Fury raises his head, spotting Hiccup. They exchange a profound, unflinching stare.
I also like a little bit I read in a fanfic about the movie through Toothless' eyes where Hiccup just...literally sat there for a while, and they watched each other. And pretty much heading back when the storm clouds started to move in. Since it was sunny at the cove and then raining by the time he got back.
Break Down
-Everything kind of aches from rough day of training, but doesn't remember that!
-Why is that a bol-oh, wait, wasn't that in my first memory? Isn't this where I passed out?
-Why didn't...who what? Thoughts are muddled, unsure what he's thinking about because connected to other memory!
-That bola looks cut.
-Did...I cut them...?
-Hum.
-Going forward, knowing in the general direction where he's going, but also looking for some damaged plant life. Looks like something big was around.
-Oh, hey, cove entrance.
-It really is a pretty cove.
-But yeah, thinking this is stupid. Whatever I was trying to do...
-Oh hey, dragon scales on the ground. Examining!
-They're pretty cool, okay.
-ewrajeoijawoiejwaoiew
-HOLY-
-Oh, so I was LOOKING for Toothless and didn't really expect him here, I guess.
-Kind of excited and nervous and ejwhaoiejwaoiew
-He's trying to climb out...?
-I really do draw incredibly fast, wow. But there's that picture!
-Wondering why he doesn't fly...
-Notices the tail then.
-Ooooo, so he was pretty literally trapped there. Welp.
-He doesn't look too good either. How long has he been in here?
-Aaaaand dropped my pencil.
-A brief moment of fear and worry, but he just...he looks curious.
-He just doesn't seem that scary and just...kind of watches...a while.
-Just measuring and watching each other for a long, long while.
-...his eyes are really expressive.
Meaning
So not the FIRST meeting with Toothless, but a pretty early one. Was watching him from up here at first, explains the picture. And maybe Toothless was in that bola? Why did no one go after him...hum.
There is a lot of nervousness here, but curiosity pretty much overwhelms it so he stays. But he doesn't feel threatened or worried for his life for more than a few brief moments and that IS weird at that time. Toothless seems just as curious about him as he is about him. And there's that intelligent glint in his eye.
It's enough to get him comfortable enough to take the risk to get closer. Just sitting in silence and watching.
It's also a good memory to remind him that his curiosity could lead him to good things...
But really, WHAT HAPPENED in the forest that one time?
Neutral-Significant: Everything we know is wrong. (Form: Five cookies, pretty good if slightly burnt, 2/5)
Break Down
-So after test drive! Toothless catching a bunch of fish, go find a place to hang out. Surrounded by some sheer rocks too.
-Aaaaaand Toothless offers up another half digested fish.
-This time, I feel all right in rejecting it.
-And suddenly, swarm of Terrors!
-R-really nervous and unsure and a bit afraid.
-ARE THESE DRAGONS SAFE TO BE AROUND?
-And Toothless is growling.
-And one trying to steal from Toothless.
-Toothless is not impressed.
-UM. UNSURE.
-And Terror about to attack, oh no, what do I do, is this bad, is this safe?
-Aaaaand Toothless ignites the gas before it fires.
-(And laughs in the face of one, huh, so Toothless can laugh.)
-That....that wasn't bad, actually.
-Heh.
-Dragons, not fireproof on the inside.
-Does that mean they are on the outside? Probably.
-Oh, poor thing.
-Feeding the terror!
-A flash of nervousness when it approaches, but...oh, no, it just...it curls up.
-It's so cute.
-Everything we know about you guys is wrong.
-(WELL NO SHIT SHERLOCK.)
Meaning
So the thing about Hiccup? Hiccup approaches most things one of two ways: One, he doesn't think too deeply about implications and such because only the most cursory of thoughts tell him that no, it's going to be terrible. Or, two, HE QUESTIONS HIMSELF EVERY SINGLE STEP OF THE WAY. Part of the problem with his machines is Hiccup questions what he's doing so he never truly gets things done right. It's why he messes up A LOT of things, because he gets nervous and fumbles and it's terrible.
So while it's kind of a 'what...Hiccup, wasn't this obvious already?' moment for others, it happens because it's how Hiccup is. He doesn't believe in himself, so even if the thought of dragons weren't what they thought entered his head, he questioned himself and didn't believe. Thought Toothless was just an oddity. So he tried not to think about it too much. EXCEPT IN THIS SCENE, it's right after Test Drive. Which is the scene of confidence boosting, which tells Hiccup that sometimes his instincts are good and can be trusted.
So he was able to allow himself to think that yes, dragons were not what they thought they were. And believed it without question. Why they did what they did, he didn't know at this point, but he knew there was some major things they were missing that needed to be figured out.
OF COURSE THIS DRAGON REVELATION MEANS VERY LITTLE TO RIDER. Rider had made this realization a loooooong time ago partly because of Obsidian and partly because Rider was, for a while, far more confident than Hiccup had been for the earlier parts of the movie. So yeah, he knew this.
But there is a feeling of confidence and belief here. Which is overall just good for him at the moment. It's still a small dent, but sloooowly it's helping build his own confidence again from the shattered pieces of his psyche.
Positive-Significant: It's working! (Form: Friendship bracelet. 1/3)
Cut off: Him entering the cove, saying "Hey Tooothless~" in an that whole 'I am plotting something' way. Then "I brought breakfast, pal. I hope you're hungry." Setting down the basket and kicking it over. Also will include the transition from him making the tail which also involves taking a basket of fish and sneaking around to the woods.
5:02 to 6:56.
Cut off: Going 'YEAH' after he comes out of the water.
Break Down
-Oh, hey, after that whole smithy thing.
-I have that feeling I get when I am willingly doing something I am pretty sure is stupid.
-I get that too much.
-Doing it anyway!
-Feeding Toothless a bunch of fish.
-...yeah, a bunch of raw fish is kind of gross.
-Eel!
-Toothless really, really, really does not like eels.
-F-fffff
-Well, not a fan of it myself.
-Let him eat and be distracted.
-Don't mind me, not doing anything back here. =D
-T-trying to get this on, pretty nervous, it's ALL COOL, I'm not doing anything.
-...delicate isn't working though.
-F-fine.
-CLIMBING ON THE TAIL. I will make you stay with my small body weight.
-Well, it fits! Got the size right, it looks right.
-Huh, maybe this can work?
-rhwaioejwaoijewaew
-AND WE'RE OFF, WHY ARE YOU FLYING?!
-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
-CLINGING
-Oh wait, what's wrong with the tail there?
-W-we're veering!
-Right, open, it needs to be open!
-(I thought that might be a problem...)
-AND UP WE GO.
-ewahjioejaoiew
-It's WORKING, yes, awesome!
-And I can make him turn, cool!
-I did it~
-And then Tooothless is not happy with me and whips me off.
-And goes down himself.
-And I'm soaked.
-BUT I DON'T EVEN CARE, MAN.
-This is awesome, I did it, I got a dragon to fly again!
-And Toothless is kind of giving me judge-y looks.
-Whatever bro, we can totes do this, trust me.
Meaning
I AM GOOD DECISION MAKER. (Hiccup also spends a lot of this movie wet for some reason.)
But it is kind of a thrill. He made something, something no one else made, and while there's issues, the idea WORKED. And he went flying. And it was amazing. And Toothless was kind of tsun, but THAT'S OKAY, because I will make you fly again.
I-I can sometimes do nice things for my best friend, even though I doomed him later, sob. It's some more confidence?! SORT OF?!

-I couldn't find it, Toothless did, has to be a dragon.
-AND I SAID TOO MUCH AGAIN.
-No, this is a bad idea.
-NO REALLY.
-WHATEVER IS ON THIS ISLAND WILL KILL YOU DAD.
-There is so many feeling of desperation, fear, guilt, but there's also anger and bitterness here.
-"FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU PLEASE JUST LISTEN TO ME?'
-Just listen, please, it's important, dad, dad, dad, please listen, oh gods.
-REJECTED.
-Threw my lot in with the dragons.
-Not a viking.
-Essentially banished.
-Not his son.
-...
-......
-..............
-Disowned.
-.........................
-
-
-
-
-
-Dad is off to ready the ships.
SORT OF?!
