ON STOICK, holding down the netted Nadders. He hears a familiar HOLLER and looks up to see...HICCUP running through the PLAZA, SCREAMING, with the NIGHTMARE fast on his heels. Alarmed, Stoick abandons the Nadders and runs off.
STOICK(to his men, re: the NADDERS)
DO NOT let them escape!
IN THE PLAZA
Vikings scatter as Hiccup dodges a near fatal blast. The Nightmare's sticky, Napalm-like fire splashes up onto buildings, setting them alight. Hiccup ducks behind the last standing brazier -- the only shelter available. The Nightmare blasts it, spraying fire all around him. Hiccup peers around the smoldering post. No sign of the Nightmare. It's leering around from the other side. Hiccup is finished. Suddenly, Stoick LEAPS between them, tackling the Nightmare to the ground. They tumble and wrestle, resuming their earlier fight. The Nightmare tries to toast him, but only coughs up smoke.
STOICK (CONT'D)
You're all out.
He smashes the Nightmare repeatedly in the face, driving it away. It takes to the air and disappears. Winded, Stoick turns to Hiccup.
HICCUP (Voice over)
Oh, and there's one more thing you need to know...
The burnt brazier pole collapses, sending the massive iron basket crashing. It bounces down the hill, destroying as it goes and scattering the Vikings who were holding down the netted Nadders. The freed dragons escape... with several sheep in tow.
HICCUP (CONT'D)
Sorry, dad.
EXT. VILLAGE - UPPER PLAZA - CONTINUOUS
The escaped Nadders fly past with sheep in their clutches. The raid is over. The dragons have clearly won. The murmuring crowd eyes Stoick, awaiting his response.
HICCUP (SHEEPISH)
Okay, but I hit a Night Fury.
Stoick grabs Hiccup by the back scruff of his collar and hauls him away, fuming with embarrassment.
HICCUP (CONT'D)
It's not like the last few times, Dad. I mean I really actually hit it. You guys were busy and I had a very clear shot. It went down, just off Raven Point. Let's get a search party out there, before it--
STOICK
--STOP! Just....stop.
He releases Hiccup. Everyone goes silent, staring expectantly.
STOICK (CONT'D)
Every time you step outside, disaster follows. Can you not see that I have bigger problems? Winter's almost here and I have an entire village to feed!
Hiccup looks around. All eyes are upon him.
HICCUP
Between you and me, the village could do with a little less feeding, don't ya think?
A few rotund Vikings stir self-consciously.
STOICK
This isn't a joke, Hiccup!
(EXASPERATED)
Why can't you follow the simplest orders?
HICCUP
I can't stop myself. I see a dragon and I have to just... kill it, you know? It's who I am, Dad.
STOICK
You are many things, Hiccup. But a dragon killer is not one of them.
Sting. Hiccup looks around to see many nods of agreement.
STOICK (CONT'D)
Get back to the house.
(TO GOBBER)
Make sure he gets there. I have his mess to clean up.
Stoick lumbers off in the opposite direction. Gobber leads Hiccup through the walk of shame. They pass the teen fire brigade as they snicker.
TUFFNUT
Quite the performance.
SNOTLOUT
I've never seen anyone mess up that badly. That helped!
HICCUP
Thank you, thank you. I was trying, so...
Hiccup avoids Astrid's glare and heads up toward a large house, standing prominently on the hill above the others.
HICCUP (CONT'D)
I really did hit one.
GOBBER
Sure, Hiccup.
HICCUP
He never listens.
GOBBER
Well, it runs in the family.
HICCUP
And when he does, it's always with this... disappointed scowl. Like someone skimped on the meat in his sandwich.
(MIMICKING STOICK)
Excuse me, barmaid. I'm afraid you brought me the wrong offspring. I ordered an extra large boy with beefy arms. Extra guts and glory on the side. This here. This is a talking fish bone.
GOBBER
You're thinking about this all wrong. It's not so much what you look like. It's what's inside that he can't stand.
Beat.
HICCUP
Thank you, for summing that up.
They reach the doorway.
GOBBER
Look, the point is, stop trying so hard to be something you're not.
Hiccup SIGHS heavily.
HICCUP
I just want to be one of you guys.
Gobber eyes him sympathetically. Hiccup turns and goes through the front door. And straight out the back door. He hurries off into the woods, determined.
Break Down
-OH GODS, LOTS OF FEAR AND RUNNING AND SCREAMING.
-WHY IS THERE A GIANT LIZARD BREATHING FIRE BEHIND ME?!
-WHY ARE THERE GIANT LIZARDS EVERYWHERE?
-Ohgodsohgodsohgods
-Oh, wow, that guy is kind of badass. And giant. Really giant. '-'
-This seems AWFULLY FAMILIAR.
-Aaaaaand timber goes the post thingy and fire gets to spread some more around the village and WOW this does not surprise me.
-Oh, giant man is apparently my dad.
-And now a bunch of giant lizards are flying away.
-THIS IS REALLY DAMN FAMILIAR. '-'
-And apparently I hit a Night Fury and this helps....?
-Dad is not happy with me.
-What are these last few times...
-Do I lie about hitting Night Furies, is that a thing?
-I REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO BELIEVE I HIT THIS THING?
-Oh, nope, Dad is not happy.
-SO APPARENTLY ME CAUSING DISASTERS IS A THING.
-Lovely.
-Dad is responsible for the village?
-Oh, so the giant reptiles are dragons.
-People don't think I'm a dragon killer.
-C-clean up my mess.
-Mocking from my peers.
-Gobber guy doesn't believe me either.
-APPARENTLY DAD DOESN'T LISTEN TO ME.
-Gobber is terrible at comfort.
-I just want to be like everyone else. \o/
Meaning
THOSE ARE CERTAINLY A LOT OF NOT FEELING GOOD ENOUGH FEELS. Dragon raids are apparently a thing! Me being a walking disaster is apparently a thing! Me wanting to be one of the guys is apparently a thing! Dad and I having terrible feels with each other is apparently a thing!
I may also be heir to some important role?
Gosh, it's kind of terrible that I was ultimately fine with the dragon chase after it was done chasing, but I am full with ALL THE FEELS FROM THE SCOLDING.
...why do people keep saying hiccup? (No, he's not going to realize that's his name because lulz.)
+Terrible confidence issues!
+Snark with terrible!
+Wanting to be a part of the guys! D-desperately.
+Hilarious reaction when he realizes he's minus one leg from between memory and Aather.
+Forever think everyone in Aather is a teenage or younger because ALL YOU PEOPLE ARE SMALL COMPARED TO VIKINGS. Unless they're super obviously elderly.
Mundane Skill: Leatherworking. (Form: A ripe white peach.)
Hiccup knows how to do stuff with leather! He can make leather, treat it, make it into stuff like saddles, outfits, and some leather armor stuff. Pretty much what it says. If it's concerning leather, he can do stuff with it.
Negative-Trivial: *Sigh* Deal. (Form: Little bottle of liquid. 1/2 uses.)
Thank you Berk's Grapevine again for transcripts.
Also including the in transit bit because Hiccup fainted in the scene before this memory. Mostly waking up in the woods when it's getting dark, checking himself that he's not dead, walking back in the semi-dark, and seeing the preparations for the nest trip when he heads back to his house. (Since he didn't seem surprised by this trip.)
INT. STOICK'S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Hiccup enters to see...STOICK, seated on a thick slice of tree-trunk. He is slouched over the fire-pit, stirring the coals with a poker. Embers waft around his beard. Hiccup tries to sneak past, up the stairs to his room. Stoick seems none the wiser, when...
STOICK
Hiccup.
HICCUP
(CAUGHT)
Dad. Uh...
Stoick stands, takes a deep breath.
I, uh... I have to talk to you, Dad.
STOICK
I need to speak with you too, son.
Hiccup and Stoick STRAIGHTEN at the same moment.
HICCUP STOICK
I've decided I don't want to I think it's time you learn fight dragons. to fight dragons.
(BEAT) (BEAT)
What? What?
STOICK (CONT'D)
You go first.
HICCUP
No, you go first.
STOICK
Alright. You get your wish. Dragon training. You start in the morning.
HICCUP
(SCRAMBLING)
Oh man, I should've gone first. Uh, 'cause I was thinking, you know we have a surplus of dragon-fighting Vikings, but do we have enough bread-making Vikings, or small home repair vikings--
STOICK
--You'll need this.
Stoick hands Hiccup his axe. Hiccup falters under the weight.
HICCUP
I don't want to fight dragons.
STOICK
Come on. Yes, you do.
HICCUP
Rephrase. Dad I can't kill dragons.
STOICK
But you will kill dragons.
HICCUP
No, I'm really very extra sure that I won't.
STOICK
It's time Hiccup.
HICCUP
Can you not hear me?
STOICK
This is serious son!
Stoick takes the axe and hands it to Hiccup again, straightening it and him so he can stand up straight.
When you carry this axe... you carry all of us with you. Which means you walk like us. You talk like us. You think like us. No more of...
(GESTURING NON-specifically at Hiccup)
... this.
HICCUP
You just gestured to all of me.
STOICK
Deal?
HICCUP
This conversation is feeling very one-sided.
STOICK
DEAL?!
Hiccup glances at the axe in his hands. It's a no-win argument.
HICCUP
(RESIGNED)
Deal.
Satisfied, Stoick grabs his helmet and duffel bag... and heads for the door.
STOICK
Good. Train hard. I'll be back. Probably.
HICCUP
And I'll be here. Maybe.
Stoick heads out the door, leaving Hiccup holding the axe.
If you want to watch part of the scene, but it's only the first half of the talk. Still! Youtube clip.
Break Down
-Pretty sure that wasn't a comfortable place to sleep, but hey, relieved I'm not...hurt? Maybe?
-Whoa, what's that ditch thing and what happened to that tree...
-Unsurprised, just moving on, walking through these woods like I know where I'm going.
-Get back all right. Was feeling kind of...despondent that whole walk?
-Oh, hey, people are moving about the village, why would they, there's no trips pla-oh.
-Something about 'another nest search?' It's something that happens.
-La la la, into the house, trying to avoid dad LIKE A WINNER.
-...why do people keep saying hiccup around me. Does it mean something?
-Kind of really don't want to have this talk with dad, but I sort of really need to...?
-Oh, oops, talking at the same time as da-what.
-WHAT DID I JUST SAY?
-I don't want to fight dragons?! Wasn't I insistent on it before?!
-And dad wants me to learn to fight dragons now?! Wasn't he just saying I wasn't a dragon slayer at all?
-Dragon fighting viking? Bread making viking? Small home repair viking? So I'm a viking!
-And possibly can bake and do small home repairs...?
-Nope, nope, nope, don't want to fight dragons.
-Dad insists I want to.
-...this rephrasing. There's SOMETHING here. 'Can't.' Why can't now instead of before? It's not like I was delusional about my physical ability.
-But there's a whoooole lot of certainty that I can't now. Not doubt of ability, but certainty I can't.
-Dad still insists I can. Why does he say that NOW? =T
-FAIL AT COMMUNICATION.
-Oh, there's more feelings of not being good enough again.
-SO I DON'T WALK, TALK, OR THINK LIKE ANYONE ELSE. Lovely.
-And apparently I just need to stop being ALL OF MYSELF to make dad happy.
-COMMUNICATIONS FAILURE~.
-Yeah, no, can't win this argument.
-*Sigh* Deal.
-Well, at least he wants me to do well in training. =|a
-Back probably...oh, so nest search is dangerous and not surprised.
-Not so optimistic about surviving my dragon training...
Meaning
SOMETHING HAPPENED. Rider isn't sure WHAT happened, but something happened. He was extremely insistent on trying to kill dragons before, but now there's just a bunch of feelings of acceptance and disappointment that he can't. Plus a bunch of other feelings that are kind of hard to define...? But it can't be physical ability, he accepted that already. This seems to be after the last memory because it seems like dad was fighting this dragon training thing for a while? Him saying he COULD was a surprise, but also feels of it being too late NOW. What made him accept he never would? WHAT HAPPENED IN THE WOODS?
....how close IS this to the first memory? Remember running INTO the forest before and now I'm returning...but I'm also familiar with those woods, so who even knows. =|a
I am a viking though! That's what my people are called? Something like that.
Yyyyyyeah, pretty sure I'm not going to make it through training. Not too worried about dad returning though.
+FEELINGS OF NOT BEING GOOD ENOUGH.
+Feelings of being a social pariah.
+Feelings of being a total failure back home.
+Not good enough as he is and keeping things to himself like a damn winner.
Neutral-Trivial: A downed dragon is a dead dragon. (Form: Rubber Iron Maiden. 1/7)
Gobber and the recruits are seated at the top of an abandoned catapult tower, toasting campfire food around a roaring bonfire. Hiccup with fish and others with various pieces of chicken. The other kids have carved cooking sticks while Hiccup's looks like it was just picked off the ground.)
GOBBER
...and with one twist he took my hand and swallowed it whole. And I saw the look on his face.
(can't deny it)
I was delicious. He must have passed the word, because it wasn't a month before another one of them took my leg.
(The kids gasp and are awed except for Hiccup. Hiccup continues to look distracted and down.)
FISHLEGS
Isn't it weird to think that your hand was inside a dragon. Like if your mind was still in control of it you could have killed the dragon from the inside by crushing his heart or something.
SNOTLOUT
I swear I'm so angry right now. I'll avenge your beautiful hand and your beautiful foot. I'll chop off the legs of every dragon I fight. With my face.
(He postures to Astrid. She rolls her eyes.)
GOBBER
(with a mouthful)
Un-unh. It's the wings and the tails you really want. If it can't fly, it can't get away. A downed dragon is a dead dragon.
ON HICCUP hiding his horrified look form the others. Gobber stands and stretches.
GOBBER (CONT'D)
Alright. I'm off to bed. You should be too. Tomorrow we get into the big boys. Slowly but surely making our way up to the Monstrous Nightmare.
(playful, taunting as he starts to hobble off.)
But who'll win the honor of killing it?
(Hiccup gets up and walks away from the group. Astrid watches him as he leaves the bonfire.)
TUFFNUT
(very matter of fact)
It's gonna be me.
(BEAT)
It's my destiny. See?
(Tuffnut rolls up his sleeve to reveal a red dragon on his arm.)
FISHLEGS
(GASPS)
Your mom let you get a tattoo?
TUFFNUT
It's not a tattoo. It's a birthmark.
RUFFNUT
Okay, I've been stuck with you since birth, and that was never there before.
TUFFNUT
Yes it was. You've just never seen me from the left side until now.
SNOTLOUT
It wasn't there yesterday. Is it a birthmark or a today-mark?
DISSOLVE TO: INT. BLACKSMITH STALL - MOMENTS LATER
Hiccup enters a small room at the back of the stall. It's covered in drawings of weaponry and scale models. He lights a candle and lays his sketchbook out on the desk, opening it to the drawing of Toothless. With a look of determination. Hiccup picks up a charcoal stick and re-draws the missing tail.
DISSOLVE TO: INT. BLACKSMITH STALL - LATER - CLOSE ON
... a creaking leather bellows. The stone forge glows with every pump. Tongs pull intricate iron pieces from the coals. They're dropped onto the anvil, twisted, lightly hammered, and dunked in a barrel. The pieces are carried to Hiccup's workbench and laid out in place on a one-to-one schematic. It's a sketch of a mechanical fin. Putting together the parts until the fin is completed.
~~~
There are times it's unfortunate that HTTYD has a lot of show, don't tell. Hiccup doesn't talk AT ALL, but you can just see his mind thinking and brooding as well as him realizing he needs to do something. Not to mention symbolism with what the kids eat and what Hiccup eats. (Never mind he doesn't even take a bite of his food. I swear, we see him with food SEVERAL TIMES and the only time he even takes a bite is the fish Toothless hacked up.)
Break Down
-Oh, hey, there are the other kids. Still don't know there names.
-And there's that guy whose my dad's friend and maybe mine....? He's apparently our teach for dragon training! I'm going with the other kids.
-Dinnertime or something.
-He cannot be bothered to care about getting the bad stick and really doesn't care for chicken, went with fish. (I like to think Gobber got him fish because he knows Hiccup's preferences.)
-No, he really can't be bothered to care about this story or posturing or anything. With my face, really.
-Something is heavy on his mind, he's thinking about something, but it's not really...clear? (It's muddle since it's primarily about the Forbidden Friendship scene.)
-A general feeling of 'why did he act that way,' 'why didn't he kill me,' and 'what do I even do with this information.' No specifics, but he knows SOMETHING happened that was a big deal and it's shaken him for some reason. Unexpected reactions....?
-Oh, there's something I care about in the story.
-Go for the wings and the tail of a dragon instead of the legs.
-"A downed dragon is a dead dragon."
-WOW, THAT IS A LOT OF SUDDEN GUILT?
-And kind of horrified.
-What...even....
-Oh, I know about a downed dragon.
-....what.
-I can't let him die?!
-So I have to help him somehow?!
-WHAT ARE THESE THOUGHTS?!
-Oh, off I go while Tuffnut is talking about a tattoo or something.
-To the blacksmith and-oh, I have a room in the back? =O That's kind of nice.
-WOW, that's sure a lot of drawings of strange weapons and models and dragons?!
-I didn't see a dragon like that at the raid...
-Pulling out a notebook I apparently carry with me and drawing a tailfin on the dragon.
-Looks like the other pictures of a strange dragon I have...
-Tailfin I'm drawing this time is different....because that's how the real thing actually looks. Closer look?!
-SURE AM DRAWING A DETAILED SCHEMATIC FOR THIS TAILFIN.
-SURE AM PREPPING THE SMITHY AND MYSELF TO MAKE THIS TAILFIN.
-SURE AM MAKING THIS TAILFIN.
-'-'
-Oh, I'm apparently a blacksmith though.
-I already knew about the leatherwork, but I can do metal work and I am apparently REALLY GOOD at drawing.
-Judging by my attempts at drawing before, that's a skill I also have to earn back. =T
-...actually not half bad at creating that tailfin, there's a lot of moving and delicate parts and did all that in just one night. Huh.
-TAILFIN COMPLETE.
Meaning
WHAT IS EVEN-
Rider is not sure what to make of this exactly. It's kind of confusing. He apparently knows about a downed dragon somewhere. Presumably, he hasn't told people about it. Perhaps it's the downed dragon's behavior that has him so distracted. He's not sure, but that would probably fit the bill of shaking him like that.
APPARENTLY HE WANTS TO HELP THIS DOWNED DRAGON? He's not sure why. There's...guilt. Maybe it's because he doesn't want to tell other people about it? Because a Viking had to have injured it and that's why he feels bad? He's not sure why. (Rider won't be making the connection he caused the damage with just this because that would mean having the confidence to believe he could really hurt a dragon. =D) Either way, making this tailfin!
Would that...would that really work? He tried to make it light and close to the real thing as possible. (He was close to the real thing....?) He still wants to know how he found this downed dragon and why he didn't tell anyone about it and why he feels bad when all he knew them were beasts that ravaged his village. And was kind of desperate to prove himself to his village. And what this dragon is. It just doesn't look like anything else he's seen. Is that a Night Fury? Is that what a Night Fury looks like? DID I FIND A NIGHT FURY?
Finitely surprised he's actually really skilled in a smithy! And is kind of artsy. Though it may explain why he's curious about how things work and why he gets it? Judging by what Apollo said before. Gosh, maybe it really will be worth his while to learn how to build stuff? And wondering if he could relearn smithing skills even without earning it back. =|a
Wants a notebook now.
Also only keeps seeing his home when it's dark at this rate. =|a
+UNCERTAIN FEELS.
+Curiosity about dragons and how they work.
+Curiosity about home.
+Wanting to learn how to build and make things.
+Some self confidence. Yay, I have useful skills that I'm actually pretty good at! \o/
+Guilt for things done to wrong dragons.
+More =T on having more 'something happened' feels without knowing what the thing was. (This will be common. A lot of the movie really builds on the scenes, so out of order always gives a sense of SOMETHING HAPPENED that lead directly to this event.)
Positive Significant: Test Drive. (Form: small square painted jack-in-the-boxes with question marks carved on each face. 2/5 Just weird noises and colors if not wound properly or after uses.)
A VIDEO THIS TIME. Hell yeah for some scenes getting enough love Dreamworks can't take them all down.
Not seen: Feeding Toothless a basket of fish and putting on the riding gear.
Break Down
-Oooo, pretty cove, what-
-'-'
-WELL THERE'S THE DRAGON.
-And that's certainly an air of familiarity and routine, feeding this dragon and putting on all this equipment, lots of rope tension and all that.
-So I DID need something to help the tailfin move, thought so, but what's with the saddl-
-I'm going to ride the dragon.
-I'm going to ride the dragon.
-*_*
-Using a lot of bud and buddy, wonder if the dragon has a name...
-Don't think they can talk though. =|a
-ANYWAY, to the riding.
-Has a cheat sheet!
-This seems to be the first real...test flight?
-Nervous. To. The. Nth. Degree. ._.
-But so excited, oh my gods.
-Going slow, doing a few simple turns, checking that I'm strapped in.
-EVERYTHING IS AMAZING EVER!
-Things are working!
-Oh, no, wait, going into a pillar.
-And another.
-F-froze up a bit there, couldn't make the shift for the tailfin, man, I don't even remember what I needed to do to make the shift.
-*Smacked*
-Okay, yeah, my dragons can't talk, something to note for the future and ask Obsidian about!
-Wondering if maybe I'm really dragging dragon buddy by being so bad with those shifts...
-FOCUS ON THE TEST FLIGHT, let's try going high!
-Oh gods, EVERYTHING IS STILL AMAZING!
-Wait, no, cheat sheet-!
-Dragons can't talk, but they CAN understand and dragon buddy really shouldn't have listened to me saying stop mid-air.
-AAAAAAAAAAA
-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
-
-(Also, smacking Hiccup let's Toothless stabilizing some of his movements, even if it hurts like a bitch. See it the two times they collided, Toothless' out of control spirals shift and slow.)
-Oh yes, on the saddle, yes, can save this, WE CAN SAVE THIS, JUST AVOID THE TREES!
-.....
-That sure is a lot of rocks.
-AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
-Cheat she-no, there is no way to read that and no way to read it in time and-
-
-NO, MAKE OR BREAK TIME!
-TIME TO WING IT.
-Combination of knowing his own equipment and synchronizing with Toothless' movements.
-Hearts beating at the same time, fully getting each other, DESTINED PARTNERS FEELING STUFF go here.
-Holy
-Effing
-Rainbows
-waejwaoiejwaoihjrewaoindwaijriajeoiwjroijwaeiwjaew
-
-REALLY DRAGON BUDDY?! =T
-A light singeing, and having to pat out a few embers, but otherwise fine and still on the high of good feelings.
-It's cool, it's cool, I can't even be mad right now~
What It Means
Huh, it's almost like Obsidian is a leggy Toothless, size-wise. (Sorry, too funny to not have him notice.)
THERE IS A DEFINITE FAMILIARITY WITH THIS DRAGON. He didn't say his name, so he's not sure if the dragon has one, but the fact he feels inclined to call him buddy feels very...personal? Yes, there was a feeling of being very close and relaxed and the dragon didn't even mind him being near and he wasn't afraid of getting close or anything.
It's actually his first memory where he genuinely feels completely relaxed for even a short time before he's in the air.
FLYING IS AMAZING. THERE ARE NO WORDS, JUST IMAGINE THE BEST THING EVER.
Sliiiiightly better on Toothless because he feels like he's helping more and there's that whole 'oneness' thing. He's not just riding, he's HELPING Toothless fly, so he's kind of flying too.
But most importantly is there's finally a sense of accomplishment. Of being able to DO something and do it right. Which...Rider hasn't gotten a lot of. Besides the one skill game (and now this one), if Rider was in the game, Heliodor lost. But when he wasn't they won at least twice. So he's been kind of feeling like a bad luck charm and every time he tried to play well, it fell flat on his face. He got food and that helped, but not a lot. And he almost killed the plants for Persephone, so, um, well...yeah. Basically one of his greater feelings of victory was the fact he was able to keep Lee from dying in the Sea Witch/Hook game, so that should give some perspective. He's been floundering and trying to do things and he's not sure if he's making a difference. Not to mention all the evasion and lying. And feeling like he SHOULD be better. So yeah, taking on a lot and making more angst for himself because that's how he is and he needs a kick to get out of it.
White Mage quest has been helping, because he thinks that if he can at least stop from screaming while reviving, he can do that quest and damn it, healing is necessary EVENTUALLY, so yay usefulness. (Wants so desperately to be useful.)
This, however, is the moment in the movie where Hiccup TRUSTS his instincts, and it worked, and it worked well. When he questioned himself, he slowed down, froze up, and that's when he hit the pillars. When he decided to trust himself and let himself react, he found he could do it. He could be right, he could do right, and he could do it without being what he's been told all his life to me. Essentially, it's a huge confidence booster. It also proved to him even when there's setbacks, he can still pull through and make it good.
HICCUP
I can't stop myself. I see a dragon and I have to just... kill it, you know? It's who I am, Dad.
STOICK
You are many things, Hiccup. But a dragon killer is not one of them.
Sting. Hiccup looks around to see many nods of agreement.
STOICK (CONT'D)
Get back to the house.
(TO GOBBER)
Make sure he gets there. I have his mess to clean up.
Stoick lumbers off in the opposite direction. Gobber leads Hiccup through the walk of shame. They pass the teen fire brigade as they snicker.
TUFFNUT
Quite the performance.
SNOTLOUT
I've never seen anyone mess up that badly. That helped!
HICCUP
Thank you, thank you. I was trying, so...
Hiccup avoids Astrid's glare and heads up toward a large house, standing prominently on the hill above the others.
HICCUP (CONT'D)
I really did hit one.
GOBBER
Sure, Hiccup.
HICCUP
He never listens.
GOBBER
Well, it runs in the family.
HICCUP
And when he does, it's always with this... disappointed scowl. Like someone skimped on the meat in his sandwich.
(MIMICKING STOICK)
Excuse me, barmaid. I'm afraid you brought me the wrong offspring. I ordered an extra large boy with beefy arms. Extra guts and glory on the side. This here. This is a talking fish bone.
GOBBER
You're thinking about this all wrong. It's not so much what you look like. It's what's inside that he can't stand.
Beat.
HICCUP
Thank you, for summing that up.
They reach the doorway.
GOBBER
Look, the point is, stop trying so hard to be something you're not.
Hiccup SIGHS heavily.
HICCUP
I just want to be one of you guys.
Gobber eyes him sympathetically. Hiccup turns and goes through the front door. And straight out the back door. He hurries off into the woods, determined.
Break Down
-OH GODS, LOTS OF FEAR AND RUNNING AND SCREAMING.
-WHY IS THERE A GIANT LIZARD BREATHING FIRE BEHIND ME?!
-WHY ARE THERE GIANT LIZARDS EVERYWHERE?
-Ohgodsohgodsohgods
-Oh, wow, that guy is kind of badass. And giant. Really giant. '-'
-This seems AWFULLY FAMILIAR.
-Aaaaaand timber goes the post thingy and fire gets to spread some more around the village and WOW this does not surprise me.
-Oh, giant man is apparently my dad.
-And now a bunch of giant lizards are flying away.
-THIS IS REALLY DAMN FAMILIAR. '-'
-And apparently I hit a Night Fury and this helps....?
-Dad is not happy with me.
-What are these last few times...
-Do I lie about hitting Night Furies, is that a thing?
-I REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO BELIEVE I HIT THIS THING?
-Oh, nope, Dad is not happy.
-SO APPARENTLY ME CAUSING DISASTERS IS A THING.
-Lovely.
-Dad is responsible for the village?
-Oh, so the giant reptiles are dragons.
-People don't think I'm a dragon killer.
-C-clean up my mess.
-Mocking from my peers.
-Gobber guy doesn't believe me either.
-APPARENTLY DAD DOESN'T LISTEN TO ME.
-Gobber is terrible at comfort.
-I just want to be like everyone else. \o/
Meaning
THOSE ARE CERTAINLY A LOT OF NOT FEELING GOOD ENOUGH FEELS. Dragon raids are apparently a thing! Me being a walking disaster is apparently a thing! Me wanting to be one of the guys is apparently a thing! Dad and I having terrible feels with each other is apparently a thing!
I may also be heir to some important role?
Gosh, it's kind of terrible that I was ultimately fine with the dragon chase after it was done chasing, but I am full with ALL THE FEELS FROM THE SCOLDING.
...why do people keep saying hiccup? (No, he's not going to realize that's his name because lulz.)
+Terrible confidence issues!
+Snark with terrible!
+Wanting to be a part of the guys! D-desperately.
+Hilarious reaction when he realizes he's minus one leg from between memory and Aather.
+Forever think everyone in Aather is a teenage or younger because ALL YOU PEOPLE ARE SMALL COMPARED TO VIKINGS. Unless they're super obviously elderly.
Mundane Skill: Leatherworking. (Form: A ripe white peach.)
Hiccup knows how to do stuff with leather! He can make leather, treat it, make it into stuff like saddles, outfits, and some leather armor stuff. Pretty much what it says. If it's concerning leather, he can do stuff with it.
Negative-Trivial: *Sigh* Deal. (Form: Little bottle of liquid. 1/2 uses.)
Thank you Berk's Grapevine again for transcripts.
Also including the in transit bit because Hiccup fainted in the scene before this memory. Mostly waking up in the woods when it's getting dark, checking himself that he's not dead, walking back in the semi-dark, and seeing the preparations for the nest trip when he heads back to his house. (Since he didn't seem surprised by this trip.)
INT. STOICK'S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Hiccup enters to see...STOICK, seated on a thick slice of tree-trunk. He is slouched over the fire-pit, stirring the coals with a poker. Embers waft around his beard. Hiccup tries to sneak past, up the stairs to his room. Stoick seems none the wiser, when...
STOICK
Hiccup.
HICCUP
(CAUGHT)
Dad. Uh...
Stoick stands, takes a deep breath.
I, uh... I have to talk to you, Dad.
STOICK
I need to speak with you too, son.
Hiccup and Stoick STRAIGHTEN at the same moment.
HICCUP STOICK
I've decided I don't want to I think it's time you learn fight dragons. to fight dragons.
(BEAT) (BEAT)
What? What?
STOICK (CONT'D)
You go first.
HICCUP
No, you go first.
STOICK
Alright. You get your wish. Dragon training. You start in the morning.
HICCUP
(SCRAMBLING)
Oh man, I should've gone first. Uh, 'cause I was thinking, you know we have a surplus of dragon-fighting Vikings, but do we have enough bread-making Vikings, or small home repair vikings--
STOICK
--You'll need this.
Stoick hands Hiccup his axe. Hiccup falters under the weight.
HICCUP
I don't want to fight dragons.
STOICK
Come on. Yes, you do.
HICCUP
Rephrase. Dad I can't kill dragons.
STOICK
But you will kill dragons.
HICCUP
No, I'm really very extra sure that I won't.
STOICK
It's time Hiccup.
HICCUP
Can you not hear me?
STOICK
This is serious son!
Stoick takes the axe and hands it to Hiccup again, straightening it and him so he can stand up straight.
When you carry this axe... you carry all of us with you. Which means you walk like us. You talk like us. You think like us. No more of...
(GESTURING NON-specifically at Hiccup)
... this.
HICCUP
You just gestured to all of me.
STOICK
Deal?
HICCUP
This conversation is feeling very one-sided.
STOICK
DEAL?!
Hiccup glances at the axe in his hands. It's a no-win argument.
HICCUP
(RESIGNED)
Deal.
Satisfied, Stoick grabs his helmet and duffel bag... and heads for the door.
STOICK
Good. Train hard. I'll be back. Probably.
HICCUP
And I'll be here. Maybe.
Stoick heads out the door, leaving Hiccup holding the axe.
If you want to watch part of the scene, but it's only the first half of the talk. Still! Youtube clip.
Break Down
-Pretty sure that wasn't a comfortable place to sleep, but hey, relieved I'm not...hurt? Maybe?
-Whoa, what's that ditch thing and what happened to that tree...
-Unsurprised, just moving on, walking through these woods like I know where I'm going.
-Get back all right. Was feeling kind of...despondent that whole walk?
-Oh, hey, people are moving about the village, why would they, there's no trips pla-oh.
-Something about 'another nest search?' It's something that happens.
-La la la, into the house, trying to avoid dad LIKE A WINNER.
-...why do people keep saying hiccup around me. Does it mean something?
-Kind of really don't want to have this talk with dad, but I sort of really need to...?
-Oh, oops, talking at the same time as da-what.
-WHAT DID I JUST SAY?
-I don't want to fight dragons?! Wasn't I insistent on it before?!
-And dad wants me to learn to fight dragons now?! Wasn't he just saying I wasn't a dragon slayer at all?
-Dragon fighting viking? Bread making viking? Small home repair viking? So I'm a viking!
-And possibly can bake and do small home repairs...?
-Nope, nope, nope, don't want to fight dragons.
-Dad insists I want to.
-...this rephrasing. There's SOMETHING here. 'Can't.' Why can't now instead of before? It's not like I was delusional about my physical ability.
-But there's a whoooole lot of certainty that I can't now. Not doubt of ability, but certainty I can't.
-Dad still insists I can. Why does he say that NOW? =T
-FAIL AT COMMUNICATION.
-Oh, there's more feelings of not being good enough again.
-SO I DON'T WALK, TALK, OR THINK LIKE ANYONE ELSE. Lovely.
-And apparently I just need to stop being ALL OF MYSELF to make dad happy.
-COMMUNICATIONS FAILURE~.
-Yeah, no, can't win this argument.
-*Sigh* Deal.
-Well, at least he wants me to do well in training. =|a
-Back probably...oh, so nest search is dangerous and not surprised.
-Not so optimistic about surviving my dragon training...
Meaning
SOMETHING HAPPENED. Rider isn't sure WHAT happened, but something happened. He was extremely insistent on trying to kill dragons before, but now there's just a bunch of feelings of acceptance and disappointment that he can't. Plus a bunch of other feelings that are kind of hard to define...? But it can't be physical ability, he accepted that already. This seems to be after the last memory because it seems like dad was fighting this dragon training thing for a while? Him saying he COULD was a surprise, but also feels of it being too late NOW. What made him accept he never would? WHAT HAPPENED IN THE WOODS?
....how close IS this to the first memory? Remember running INTO the forest before and now I'm returning...but I'm also familiar with those woods, so who even knows. =|a
I am a viking though! That's what my people are called? Something like that.
Yyyyyyeah, pretty sure I'm not going to make it through training. Not too worried about dad returning though.
+FEELINGS OF NOT BEING GOOD ENOUGH.
+Feelings of being a social pariah.
+Feelings of being a total failure back home.
+Not good enough as he is and keeping things to himself like a damn winner.
Neutral-Trivial: A downed dragon is a dead dragon. (Form: Rubber Iron Maiden. 1/7)
Gobber and the recruits are seated at the top of an abandoned catapult tower, toasting campfire food around a roaring bonfire. Hiccup with fish and others with various pieces of chicken. The other kids have carved cooking sticks while Hiccup's looks like it was just picked off the ground.)
GOBBER
...and with one twist he took my hand and swallowed it whole. And I saw the look on his face.
(can't deny it)
I was delicious. He must have passed the word, because it wasn't a month before another one of them took my leg.
(The kids gasp and are awed except for Hiccup. Hiccup continues to look distracted and down.)
FISHLEGS
Isn't it weird to think that your hand was inside a dragon. Like if your mind was still in control of it you could have killed the dragon from the inside by crushing his heart or something.
SNOTLOUT
I swear I'm so angry right now. I'll avenge your beautiful hand and your beautiful foot. I'll chop off the legs of every dragon I fight. With my face.
(He postures to Astrid. She rolls her eyes.)
GOBBER
(with a mouthful)
Un-unh. It's the wings and the tails you really want. If it can't fly, it can't get away. A downed dragon is a dead dragon.
ON HICCUP hiding his horrified look form the others. Gobber stands and stretches.
GOBBER (CONT'D)
Alright. I'm off to bed. You should be too. Tomorrow we get into the big boys. Slowly but surely making our way up to the Monstrous Nightmare.
(playful, taunting as he starts to hobble off.)
But who'll win the honor of killing it?
(Hiccup gets up and walks away from the group. Astrid watches him as he leaves the bonfire.)
TUFFNUT
(very matter of fact)
It's gonna be me.
(BEAT)
It's my destiny. See?
(Tuffnut rolls up his sleeve to reveal a red dragon on his arm.)
FISHLEGS
(GASPS)
Your mom let you get a tattoo?
TUFFNUT
It's not a tattoo. It's a birthmark.
RUFFNUT
Okay, I've been stuck with you since birth, and that was never there before.
TUFFNUT
Yes it was. You've just never seen me from the left side until now.
SNOTLOUT
It wasn't there yesterday. Is it a birthmark or a today-mark?
DISSOLVE TO: INT. BLACKSMITH STALL - MOMENTS LATER
Hiccup enters a small room at the back of the stall. It's covered in drawings of weaponry and scale models. He lights a candle and lays his sketchbook out on the desk, opening it to the drawing of Toothless. With a look of determination. Hiccup picks up a charcoal stick and re-draws the missing tail.
DISSOLVE TO: INT. BLACKSMITH STALL - LATER - CLOSE ON
... a creaking leather bellows. The stone forge glows with every pump. Tongs pull intricate iron pieces from the coals. They're dropped onto the anvil, twisted, lightly hammered, and dunked in a barrel. The pieces are carried to Hiccup's workbench and laid out in place on a one-to-one schematic. It's a sketch of a mechanical fin. Putting together the parts until the fin is completed.
~~~
There are times it's unfortunate that HTTYD has a lot of show, don't tell. Hiccup doesn't talk AT ALL, but you can just see his mind thinking and brooding as well as him realizing he needs to do something. Not to mention symbolism with what the kids eat and what Hiccup eats. (Never mind he doesn't even take a bite of his food. I swear, we see him with food SEVERAL TIMES and the only time he even takes a bite is the fish Toothless hacked up.)
Break Down
-Oh, hey, there are the other kids. Still don't know there names.
-And there's that guy whose my dad's friend and maybe mine....? He's apparently our teach for dragon training! I'm going with the other kids.
-Dinnertime or something.
-He cannot be bothered to care about getting the bad stick and really doesn't care for chicken, went with fish. (I like to think Gobber got him fish because he knows Hiccup's preferences.)
-No, he really can't be bothered to care about this story or posturing or anything. With my face, really.
-Something is heavy on his mind, he's thinking about something, but it's not really...clear? (It's muddle since it's primarily about the Forbidden Friendship scene.)
-A general feeling of 'why did he act that way,' 'why didn't he kill me,' and 'what do I even do with this information.' No specifics, but he knows SOMETHING happened that was a big deal and it's shaken him for some reason. Unexpected reactions....?
-Oh, there's something I care about in the story.
-Go for the wings and the tail of a dragon instead of the legs.
-"A downed dragon is a dead dragon."
-WOW, THAT IS A LOT OF SUDDEN GUILT?
-And kind of horrified.
-What...even....
-Oh, I know about a downed dragon.
-....what.
-I can't let him die?!
-So I have to help him somehow?!
-WHAT ARE THESE THOUGHTS?!
-Oh, off I go while Tuffnut is talking about a tattoo or something.
-To the blacksmith and-oh, I have a room in the back? =O That's kind of nice.
-WOW, that's sure a lot of drawings of strange weapons and models and dragons?!
-I didn't see a dragon like that at the raid...
-Pulling out a notebook I apparently carry with me and drawing a tailfin on the dragon.
-Looks like the other pictures of a strange dragon I have...
-Tailfin I'm drawing this time is different....because that's how the real thing actually looks. Closer look?!
-SURE AM DRAWING A DETAILED SCHEMATIC FOR THIS TAILFIN.
-SURE AM PREPPING THE SMITHY AND MYSELF TO MAKE THIS TAILFIN.
-SURE AM MAKING THIS TAILFIN.
-'-'
-Oh, I'm apparently a blacksmith though.
-I already knew about the leatherwork, but I can do metal work and I am apparently REALLY GOOD at drawing.
-Judging by my attempts at drawing before, that's a skill I also have to earn back. =T
-...actually not half bad at creating that tailfin, there's a lot of moving and delicate parts and did all that in just one night. Huh.
-TAILFIN COMPLETE.
Meaning
WHAT IS EVEN-
Rider is not sure what to make of this exactly. It's kind of confusing. He apparently knows about a downed dragon somewhere. Presumably, he hasn't told people about it. Perhaps it's the downed dragon's behavior that has him so distracted. He's not sure, but that would probably fit the bill of shaking him like that.
APPARENTLY HE WANTS TO HELP THIS DOWNED DRAGON? He's not sure why. There's...guilt. Maybe it's because he doesn't want to tell other people about it? Because a Viking had to have injured it and that's why he feels bad? He's not sure why. (Rider won't be making the connection he caused the damage with just this because that would mean having the confidence to believe he could really hurt a dragon. =D) Either way, making this tailfin!
Would that...would that really work? He tried to make it light and close to the real thing as possible. (He was close to the real thing....?) He still wants to know how he found this downed dragon and why he didn't tell anyone about it and why he feels bad when all he knew them were beasts that ravaged his village. And was kind of desperate to prove himself to his village. And what this dragon is. It just doesn't look like anything else he's seen. Is that a Night Fury? Is that what a Night Fury looks like? DID I FIND A NIGHT FURY?
Finitely surprised he's actually really skilled in a smithy! And is kind of artsy. Though it may explain why he's curious about how things work and why he gets it? Judging by what Apollo said before. Gosh, maybe it really will be worth his while to learn how to build stuff? And wondering if he could relearn smithing skills even without earning it back. =|a
Wants a notebook now.
Also only keeps seeing his home when it's dark at this rate. =|a
+UNCERTAIN FEELS.
+Curiosity about dragons and how they work.
+Curiosity about home.
+Wanting to learn how to build and make things.
+Some self confidence. Yay, I have useful skills that I'm actually pretty good at! \o/
+Guilt for things done to wrong dragons.
+More =T on having more 'something happened' feels without knowing what the thing was. (This will be common. A lot of the movie really builds on the scenes, so out of order always gives a sense of SOMETHING HAPPENED that lead directly to this event.)
Positive Significant: Test Drive. (Form: small square painted jack-in-the-boxes with question marks carved on each face. 2/5 Just weird noises and colors if not wound properly or after uses.)
A VIDEO THIS TIME. Hell yeah for some scenes getting enough love Dreamworks can't take them all down.
Not seen: Feeding Toothless a basket of fish and putting on the riding gear.
Break Down
-Oooo, pretty cove, what-
-'-'
-WELL THERE'S THE DRAGON.
-And that's certainly an air of familiarity and routine, feeding this dragon and putting on all this equipment, lots of rope tension and all that.
-So I DID need something to help the tailfin move, thought so, but what's with the saddl-
-I'm going to ride the dragon.
-I'm going to ride the dragon.
-*_*
-Using a lot of bud and buddy, wonder if the dragon has a name...
-Don't think they can talk though. =|a
-ANYWAY, to the riding.
-Has a cheat sheet!
-This seems to be the first real...test flight?
-Nervous. To. The. Nth. Degree. ._.
-But so excited, oh my gods.
-Going slow, doing a few simple turns, checking that I'm strapped in.
-EVERYTHING IS AMAZING EVER!
-Things are working!
-Oh, no, wait, going into a pillar.
-And another.
-F-froze up a bit there, couldn't make the shift for the tailfin, man, I don't even remember what I needed to do to make the shift.
-*Smacked*
-Okay, yeah, my dragons can't talk, something to note for the future and ask Obsidian about!
-Wondering if maybe I'm really dragging dragon buddy by being so bad with those shifts...
-FOCUS ON THE TEST FLIGHT, let's try going high!
-Oh gods, EVERYTHING IS STILL AMAZING!
-Wait, no, cheat sheet-!
-Dragons can't talk, but they CAN understand and dragon buddy really shouldn't have listened to me saying stop mid-air.
-AAAAAAAAAAA
-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
-
-(Also, smacking Hiccup let's Toothless stabilizing some of his movements, even if it hurts like a bitch. See it the two times they collided, Toothless' out of control spirals shift and slow.)
-Oh yes, on the saddle, yes, can save this, WE CAN SAVE THIS, JUST AVOID THE TREES!
-.....
-That sure is a lot of rocks.
-AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
-Cheat she-no, there is no way to read that and no way to read it in time and-
-
-NO, MAKE OR BREAK TIME!
-TIME TO WING IT.
-Combination of knowing his own equipment and synchronizing with Toothless' movements.
-Hearts beating at the same time, fully getting each other, DESTINED PARTNERS FEELING STUFF go here.

-REALLY DRAGON BUDDY?! =T
-A light singeing, and having to pat out a few embers, but otherwise fine and still on the high of good feelings.
-It's cool, it's cool, I can't even be mad right now~
What It Means
Huh, it's almost like Obsidian is a leggy Toothless, size-wise. (Sorry, too funny to not have him notice.)
THERE IS A DEFINITE FAMILIARITY WITH THIS DRAGON. He didn't say his name, so he's not sure if the dragon has one, but the fact he feels inclined to call him buddy feels very...personal? Yes, there was a feeling of being very close and relaxed and the dragon didn't even mind him being near and he wasn't afraid of getting close or anything.
It's actually his first memory where he genuinely feels completely relaxed for even a short time before he's in the air.
FLYING IS AMAZING. THERE ARE NO WORDS, JUST IMAGINE THE BEST THING EVER.
Sliiiiightly better on Toothless because he feels like he's helping more and there's that whole 'oneness' thing. He's not just riding, he's HELPING Toothless fly, so he's kind of flying too.
But most importantly is there's finally a sense of accomplishment. Of being able to DO something and do it right. Which...Rider hasn't gotten a lot of. Besides the one skill game (and now this one), if Rider was in the game, Heliodor lost. But when he wasn't they won at least twice. So he's been kind of feeling like a bad luck charm and every time he tried to play well, it fell flat on his face. He got food and that helped, but not a lot. And he almost killed the plants for Persephone, so, um, well...yeah. Basically one of his greater feelings of victory was the fact he was able to keep Lee from dying in the Sea Witch/Hook game, so that should give some perspective. He's been floundering and trying to do things and he's not sure if he's making a difference. Not to mention all the evasion and lying. And feeling like he SHOULD be better. So yeah, taking on a lot and making more angst for himself because that's how he is and he needs a kick to get out of it.
White Mage quest has been helping, because he thinks that if he can at least stop from screaming while reviving, he can do that quest and damn it, healing is necessary EVENTUALLY, so yay usefulness. (Wants so desperately to be useful.)
This, however, is the moment in the movie where Hiccup TRUSTS his instincts, and it worked, and it worked well. When he questioned himself, he slowed down, froze up, and that's when he hit the pillars. When he decided to trust himself and let himself react, he found he could do it. He could be right, he could do right, and he could do it without being what he's been told all his life to me. Essentially, it's a huge confidence booster. It also proved to him even when there's setbacks, he can still pull through and make it good.
