Written Summary
A young Hiccup is captured by Alvin, leader of the Outcasts, after Toothless and him were tricked into going to the Isle of Night to look for Night Furies. With help by Mildew, who isn't a surprise he's a traitor. Hiccup is shown other captures dragons, snarkily pointing out how the Outcasts are failing to contain the dragons. Alvin says this will be his new job, which Hiccup really isn't for.
He's finally shown a bound and locked up Toothless, about the only dragon they got a handle on. And Alvin makes it clear if Hiccup doesn't make the dragons useful to him, he will kill the dragons, starting with Toothless. Then Hiccup is thrown into a cell to think about it.
He immediately works on trying to escape. Only to stop when Mildew shows up with Alvin and Savage. Alvin is seemingly betraying Mildew by throwing him in the cell and taking his sheep friend to cook. Hiccup begins his escape attempts again. Mildew starts talking to him and offers advice on an escape. Which Hiccup takes the advice, pretending to be giving in, using his leg as a weapon. This doesn't knock out the guard, but Mildew uses his staff to finish the job.
And if there's any proof that Hiccup absolutely Hates This Man, its how he thanks him for the key, and was so ready to just ditch him until Mildew points out he can help Hiccup find Toothless and only then does he let him out.
They make their way across the island, making their way through wild dragons that Hiccup is utterly unafraid of, Mildew very afraid. Hiccup then makes friends with a Deadly Nadder. And showing Mildew how to make friends. Dragon training begins and ends with trust, from both parties. Mildew is Making An Attempt and this is a surprise.
Unfortunately, when they get to the dragon cages, Toothless is gone. And then Alvin releases all the dragons that had been caged, seeming to be trying to either capture hiccup or see how he tames them. Hiccup decides to make the dragons collide to get away because they're all very angry.
Then they get out and suddenly, STOICK ARRIVES. On the back of a dragon! Along with his friends and Gobber. Gobber tries to kill Mildew and Hiccup goes to his defense. There is clearly Mixed Feelings on this.
Hiccup uses a dragon call to see if Toothless can come to him, and finally they find him! He had escaped on his own. Hiccup apologizes, taking responsibility for getting captured. Then Alvin shows up, challenging Hiccup to not run, calling him Stoick's little runt and Hiccup also Hates This Man and was very ready to attack him with Toothless despite Stoick's protest. Which...just gets him trapped.
The dragons are really not okay with Hiccup and Toothless getting attacked though and were quick to save them even before the riders. They try to make their escape, but 'lose' Mildew in the attempt, the Outcast forces driving them away from trying to save him. (Mildew is terrible.)
But they get back to Berk, a timeskip to Hiccup burning fake Night Fury pages. Then Astrid comes get him for Bork Week and a parade. And while things aren't fully integrated, its clear dragons are milling around the village more. They're friendly. And Hiccup and the riders lead the dragons through an air show of sorts, with people cheering. And he seems more at peace with this.

Written Summary
It starts with Hiccup telling everyone Fishlegs is in charge while he and Astrid are gone. They go off to check out a few islands, which is skipped over.
When they come back, there is A Lot of fire and with quite a lot of resigned practice, put it out with some strategically places barrels. Then Hiccup begins the lecture for Snotlout and the Twins about using up all the Nightmare Gel. They were stocking it up for defense against Viggo and his army, to be prepared for any attack or if they're without their dragons. He sends them off to replace the Gel because Hookfang can't do all of that.
Then Fishlegs comes back and Hiccup has another lecture. They're alone out here and the chaos can't happen. He expected better of Fishlegs and the outcome is disappointing.
Some time passes and he finds Fishlegs is more upbeat, and working on a personal project. He tries to talk to him about earlier, but he's quick to run off.
Hiccup is concerned Fishlegs has run off. Astrid says he's probably just geeking out about something, and Hiccup says he usually geeks out with him. He wonders if he was too hard on him. And then Snotlout and the Twins show up to deliver some of the Gel and they're doing some kind of deal. Snotlout and twin things. But hey, gel to put away and try not to worry about Fishlegs.
Another skip and Hiccup wakes up to Meatlug trying to get into his hut. She's distressed and its probably Fishlegs. He gets everyone together to follow Meatlug to Fishlegs. They find carvings on the wall and an old sword and Hiccup recognizes it, talking about how he should have paid attention.
They do deeper and get swarmed by a bevy of Smidvargs, small dragons. Clearly wild versions of whoever Smidvarg is and aggressive. They're having trouble dealing with the numbers when Fishlegs shows up, chasing them off with loud noises. They get to a wider cavern with a hatch, and one of the dragons who seems especially fond of Fishlegs comes in to help get them out. Fishlegs manages to get the hatch open to expose the dragons to sunlight, which they're sensitive too, and they escape, closing the hatch behind them.
Hiccup approaches Fishlegs back at the base. He wants to talk about the lecture and Fishlegs admits he was right, Fishlegs should have been stronger with Snotlout and the twins, and praises him for being able to lead by example and not fear or bossing people around. Hiccup admits he can barely control them his bests day, proven by when the nightmare gel explodes. Again. Then he apologizes for being so hard on him and praises him for his leadership in the cave and with the Night Terrors and he would trust him to be in charge.
Clearly Hiccup, Astrid, and Fishlegs are the only adults on this island.
And then Hiccup and Fishlegs go to geek out about the Albino Night Terrors and the cool old sword.
Neutral-Trivial: Gruffnut con (RTTE 4.2)
Race to the Edge, Season 4, episode 2. Gruff Around The Edges. Only while Hiccup is present.
Written Summary
Hiccup is woken up Ruffnut, Tuffnut, and Chicken using the thunderear to do what is basically a radio show at dawn. Talking about the weather, and reading all the letters that arrived. One announces the arrival of Gruffnut, their cousin. Tuffnut thinks he's an amazing world traveler. Ruffnut thinks he's a grifter. They act accordingly. Tuffnut even asks to be in charge, which Hiccup refuses at first because the last time led to everything being on fire.
Gruffnut arrives and Gruffnut and Tuffnut are even more identical then the twins.
Gruffnut is obviously a grifter, making up stories about his adventures. Tuffnut is falling for all of it and desperately wants to impress and Hiccup finally takes pity on Tuffnut and says its 'his' base and lets him act like he's in charge.
Hiccup is quickly regretting the decision as Tuffnut starts breaking things and acting too much like Hiccup is some kind of assistant and after damage to his hut, he decides to put a stop to the charade.
Tuffnut goes off with Gruffnut to explain the truth and it seems things are sorted until later, Ruffnut gets Hiccup, telling him Gruffnut went into his hut alone. He sees Gruffnut is sneaking up onto a sleeping Toothless, who wakes up and is very not happy. Hiccup heads upstairs, taking a few moments before actually telling Toothless to calm down and Gruffnut starts making up excuses. Then Tuffnut shows up with greased boars and Ruffnut is ditched. Hiccup is silent as he looks between them, thinking about how to handle this.
The next day, Tuffnut shows up to say Gruffnut has left. Ruffnut goes on a tirade about him coming, getting Tuff to worship him, and disappearing, and how he's a phony. Then 'Tuff' says if Gruffnut can fool people, why shouldn't he, which is surprising for Hiccup to hear. In part that its a really weird thought process for Tuff.
Later, Meatlug is bloated after being given a certain kind of rock and can't patrol. Hiccup is looking for a replacement when Tuffnut volunteers, claiming to want time with Ruff now that Gruff is gone. Hiccup is just glad its settled and goes to fix his hut.
Then 'Gruffnut' shows up, flying in on a Night Terror, and Hiccup is extremely not impressed with this guy, having decided he is indeed a con man. Gruff claims to be Tuff and Hiccup rejects the idea on the basis of he would know one of his best friends when he sees them. Tuff is touched and wonders why and listing several times he caused trouble for Hiccup. Hiccup realizes its Tuff and that Ruffnut is on patrol with Gruffnut pretending to be Tuffnut.
They go after them, finding Ruff and Gruff fighting over control of Barf and Belch, with a boat in the water below. Tuff then jumps off Toothless to join the fray. He misses at first, but using the Dragon Fly 2, he's able to get Gruff by surprise.
So begins a fight on a Zippleback, Hiccup focusing on keeping the Dragon Hunter ship from hitting them since there's no good way for him to get Gruff off without knocking off Tuff. But eventually the twins succeed, knocking him into the boat of his debtors.
But the twins do decide to save him. Despite his attempt to sell their dragon.
The next morning, he's invited to join them on their show and he says they were amazing at defeating Gruffnut and showing mercy. They explain he was still family and they decided it would be better for him to have a real adventure.
Neutral-Negative: Dragon hunter escape island (RTTE 2.8, 2.9)
Race to the Edge, Edge of Disaster part 1 and part 2. Season 2, episode 8 and 9. Only the parts where Hiccup is there.
Written Summary
Astrid comes complaining about the twins leaving up dummies instead of keeping watch. Hiccup keeps calm because, well, nothing gets done if they're both worked up. He does promise to talk to the twins until Terror Mail comes from Johann, asking for help with Dragon Hunters that are attacking him. Snotlout and Hiccup are the only ones with working armor, and Fishlegs is immune to their arrows, so Astrid has to stay with the twins on the island. He asks for them to try and get along. Astrid isn't happy. She may take it out on Snotlout a bit when he hits on her.
They go off to find Johann and find him after a bit. He's actually being attacked by Dragons over Hunters. They go about trying to get the dragons away from the ship without hurting them. They do manage it pretty well until Fishlegs gets kidnapped by the dragons. They head to the island to find Fishlegs while Hiccup tries to figure out what happened.
Even wild, Nightmares, Gronckles, and Nadders aren't this aggressive, to randomly attack and terrorize without looking for something specific, like food or water.
They finally find the nest of the dragons. They've got Fishlegs surrounded and while it will be hard to save him, Hiccup as a plan. Even if Johann and Snotlout are ready to just leave.
Instead, they plan and after making it clear to Snotlout and Johann, mostly Johann, what the plan is, they make their move. Hiccup manages to get to Fishlegs, who brings up all the scars the dragons have. Hiccup is dismissive of first, a diverse pack is likely to fight more, but really he just wants to get Fishlegs to safety. But Fishlegs insists, the scars are from human weapons.
They realize the dragons have been hurt by dragon hunters and that's why they've been so aggressive. And they drove Johann to this island to draw their crew away from the Edge to help him. They need to get back.
But when Fishlegs hears Johann is riding his Meatlug, he gets a bit too loud, which draws her attention, which draws the dragon's attention, and things go awry. They have to retreat and regroup, as the dragons refuse to let Fishlegs go.
Hiccup explains the situation to Snotlout and Johann. Snotlout suggests Hiccup go talk to the dragon in charge, half serious, half joke, because it really could be a suicide mission. Hiccup gives it more serious thought and decides he'll rile up the dragons solo and lead them away so the other two can rescue Fishlegs.
Hiccup leads the leading group of the dragons away and its a constant struggle of Toothless' protective instinct and the knowledge they just want to get rid of Hiccup to protect Toothless from him. Hiccup does end up knocked up and having to use the flightsuit to land on an outcropping, facing off with the lead dragons. But with the flight suit, Hiccup is able to seem not so different from the dragons and they start to actually listen to him.
It seems like appearing more like dragons goes far in calming them down. Hiccup regoups with Johann, Snotlout, and Fishlegs, and finally manage to leave the island. He also brings along the other dragon because he's worried about a part two to the draw away plan. Then they run into Ruffnut riding Windshear, confirming those worries.
They get to the Edge, and see the Hunters attacking the edge. The riders and dragons drive them off, with Ryker promising they will meet again. Heather was there and seemed to be with the Hunters? But also on their side??? Also Dagur was there in the chaos. Also his name is Hiccup Haddock.
Hiccup is impressed at how Astrid and Tuffnut managed to defend the Edge the whole time with trickery and a lot of weapons. But they need to bring the dragons back to their island now.
Neutral Trivial: Axes and unions (RTTE 2.5)
Race to the Edge , season 2, episode 5. Snotlout Gets The Axe
Written Summary
They're training when Spitelout shows up, telling Snotlout he has to bring the Jorgenson Ceremonial Axe to a wedding between them and the Hoffersons. Snotlout and Astrid's families. Astrid not for being family with Snotlout. And Snotlout is feeling pressure when his father lists all the people who were supposed to bring it before Snotlout was given the honor by default. Including Griplout, who lost his arms in a mutton accident. Astrid and Hiccup both have to go to to represent their families. Their dynamic continues with Astrid not having patience for Snotlout's antics, Snotlout has a lot of bravado and is desperate to make his dad proud, and Hiccup is kinder to Snotlout, and reminds Astrid to be, but still willing to call him out some.
They leave, Snotlout feeling the angst, and Astrid and Hiccup have a list of disasters he's caused. He isn't willing to admit it and in a fit of bravado, drops the axe from the sky. They manage to find it. On the back of an Armor Wing, a dragon who uses metal as a suit of armor and is unwilling to give it up and has a welding bright fire. Gronckle Iron can take the fire.
Snotlout gets the 'brilliant' idea of drawing Smothering Smokebreath dragons to the Armor Wing, since they love metal too. The plan actually works....until they have to chase down the Smothering Smokebreath that got the axe to retrieve it and then scare the rest from the Armor Wing since it lacks scales and needs the metal for protection.
In the end, they get the axe, make tentative peace with the Armor Wing, and get to the wedding seemingly late. Astrid and Hiccup try to take the fall, but Snotlout owns up to his mistake. Only to find out a fight broke out independent of the axe, so its probably best it wasn't there. Spitelout does validate Snotlout, saying he could depend on him.
They get back to The Edge to find out Fishlegs and Ruffnut got married by Tuffnut. Except Tuffnut never finished officiator training because they jumped off a cliff, thus annulling the marriage.
Trivial Negative: Zippleback Experience (RTTE 2.6)
Race to the Edge, season 2, episode 6. The Zippleback Experience.
Written Summary
The riders are building a watchtower in response to some unfamiliar ships. They are also not a group who goes just blasting people into oblivion. In the distance, they see the twins sledding down on Barf and Blech, letting off explosions, that cause an avalanche. Barf and Belch lose control and the twins fall off. Toothless and Hiccup end up being the ones to save Barf and Belch. Also breaks Hiccup's foot, for which he has a spare.
The twins try to escape before the lecture comes, but are stopped short with a well placed fireblast. Hiccup sentences them both to the first two shifts of patrol. He heads back to his hut, only to open it to be assaulted with a bunch of fish. At first he thinks Ruff and Tuff are messing with him, but he soon discovers its Barf and Belch.
Saving Barf and Belch has earned Hiccup and Toothless a life debt, and now the Zippleback has dedicated their life to serving them until the end of their life, or the debt is repair. Unfortunately, servitude often causes more problems, frustration, broken legs, and explosions for Hiccup, and leave the twins without their dragon. So begins the plans to put Hiccup in varying states of dangerous so the Zippleback can save him, with little success. Including having Snotlout attack him, with Hiccup unwilling to fight until Snotlout insulted him as the next chief, so he punched back with. The past day and some years of frustration behind it. The planning and attempts hit critical mass and Hiccup has to try and get some time alone to calm down.
Which ends up with him getting captured by Ryker and Dagur. They want Hiccup for all his knowledge of dragons and what he's learned from the Dragon Eye, under threat of torture. Then Barf and Belch some to the rescue, resulting in a fight on the ship, but the Zippleback manages to get Hiccup off the boat. Just in time for the others to arrive. Hiccup gets separated from Bar and Belch, with the Zippleback getting captured, but the twins are able to save them. They're able to drive off the ship and return to the Edge and sense of normalcy with the life debt paid.
Neutral Negative: Snow wraiths and secrets. (RTTE 2.7)
Race to the Edge, season 2, episode 7, Snow Way Out.
Written Summary
They're doing more training, this time testing out armor for Toothless. Unfortunately the armor is too heavy and rigid and breaks off. They need to make improvements. Then Astrid shows up with news from 'Trader Johann,' that he saw Ryker, Heather, and the Dragon Hunters buying all the cold gear they could in summer. They're after the Snow Wraith tooth, which is a key for the Dragon Eye. And after they get a key, they'll come after them, so Hiccup plans to head them off. By protecting a dragon that almost killed them before. Hiccup plans relocation.
Also there are A Lot of feelings about Heather being with the Dragon Hunters. Toothless is using echolocation to try and find the Snow Wraith in the storm with no luck, which is odd. It had been on us right away. Hiccup goes off with Astrid to scout the island, but ends up separated from her in the storm. Luckily she comes back in one piece and Astrid brings up a theory the Snow Wraith might be hibernating, which is why it wasn't on them so fast.
Hiccup is confused how she got out so far to see the cave, and Astrid said she just got carried away, Hiccup knows her. Hiccup says he does, but she can't go off like that, he relies on her. They keep on and find the cave with evidence of the Snow Wraith. Unfortunately the Dragon Hunters aren't far behind them, cornering them in the cave.
Ryker calls out Hiccup and he goes to talk to him for a chance at a peaceful resolution. Ryker is not impressed with Hiccup's stature, and Hiccup snarks back. He continues with a mix of snark and confidence. Ryker wants the Dragon Eye or surrender. Hiccup just wants the Dragon Hunters to leave. A fight breaks out, ending with the Dragon Hunters trapping the Riders in the cave.
Hiccup continues with the relocation plan. Then they find three Snow Wraiths, starting to stir. Hiccup tries to put them out with a Dragon Root arrow and is too slow. They're attacked, but manage to drive them off, and then they have to follow the burrows out when they hear the distressed dragons getting captured.
They find the Hunters and set off an avalanche, and begin a fight with the Hunters. Hiccup chases after Ryker and Heather, until Astrid interferes. Hiccup tries to keep after, when she reveals Heather is with them, causing him to relent. There is a skip as they relocate the dragons and head to the Edge where Astrid explains what's going on.
Heather lied to Dagur to get close to him to avenge her family. When she found out Dagur was with the Hunters, she got closer to find out more about them. Heather and Astrid have been working together and putting on an act. Hiccup is....quietly upset that Astrid shut him out like that. He doesn't understand why she wouldn't let him take down Ryker. Astrid apologizes and explains Ryker isn't the leader, but Viggo Grimborn is. Heather has been trying to draw him out. Hiccup is still conflicted, but he hopes Heather knows what she's doing, for all their sake. Putting a tentative trust in her again, and worry.
Significant Neutral: Something crazy.

Written Summary
A young Hiccup stands at the top of the docks, staring out at the horizon. Astrid approaches and begins to talk. Summing up the all the things Hiccup has just lost, father, tribe, best friend. Hiccup is dismissive and depressed, wondering why he couldn't have just killed Toothless in the woods. It would have been better for everyone. Astrid says the rest of them would have done it. And insists on knowing why Hiccup didn't. Hiccup is still dismissive, he doesn't know, he couldn't, and Astrid demands a real answer. She wants to remember what he'll say right now. Hiccup snaps, calling himself a coward and weak, and he wouldn't kill a dragon.
Astrid latches onto the word change and Hiccup is still blowing it off. 300 years and he's the first viking who wouldn't kill a dragon. And Astrid points out he's the first to ride one and asks again. Hiccup finally answers, saying Toothless looked as frightened as him, he looked at him and saw himself. Astrid says he's probably frightened now and asks what Hiccup will do. He answers something stupid. Astrid approves, but he did that already. So he decides something crazy and runs off.
There's a skip and he's in the kill ring, muttering to himself as he goes along the cages about which dragon to take with him, he can't protect them all...
And Astrid shows up with the other kids. They approach, throwing in their support and approval to his bewilderment until Astrid asks and he realizes what she did. She brought them to help, which, frankly, greatly increases his odds.
He releases the dragons one by one, introducing them to the kids. The first three are fairly tame from Hiccup exposure, and then there's the Nightmare. This takes a more careful approach,, briefly offering his hand to the Nightmare and looking away. This gets Hookfang to follow as he guides him out to Snotlout, showing them out how to make a true connection for the first time with a dragon.
Then they get on the dragons and start flying out, Hiccup yelling out what information he can to help keep their dragons sane and how best to work with them. They're moving fast through the air, the dragons knowing where to go. They see fire on the horizon, and finally, the ships, on fire, the vikings on the beach, and the Red Death. A giant dragon. Literally all the other dragons are bite sized.
As they get close, Hiccup starts giving orders, using the skills the kids specialize in, and what they learned in training to keep the Red Death confused and distracted. Hiccup goes to Toothless, working to free him as the ship burns around them. Until the Red Death steps on it, sending Toothless to the water. Hiccup goes after him, nearly drowning in his effort to free him.
Then his father dragons him out of the water. Before going back in to free Toothless. Toothless comes out with Stoick and calls for Hiccup. Hiccup is quick to go to him when Stoick reaches for his arm. And he apologizes for everything. And Hiccup does the same. Stoick tells him he doesn't have to go, and Hiccup responds they're vikings, it's an occupational hazard. Stoick says he's proud to call him his son, and Hiccup thanks him, touched.
And then he's off. The others are extracted from the danger zone with mostly hurt dragons, and Hiccup gets Astrid out, before focusing on the Red Death. He decides to provoke the Red Death into flying, heading for the clouds. From there, he uses Toothless size and speed to lead her through rocks and into the dark clouds. Blasting at her wings in rapid succession, before provoking her into a dive. All the while the fake tail is on fire, putting them on a timer.
Moving down, he waits until the Red Death has gathered the gas for a fire blast, blasting back into the gas in her mouth, setting her insides on fire. And with her wings damages, she's unable to pull out of the dive, causing her to literally explode upon impact with the ground. They start flying up, trying to outrun the fireball.
And get caught by the tail. Hiccup falls off Toothless, towards the fire, Toothless diving after him. The fire is getting closer, Toothless is inches away, lunging forward the last bit, teeth clamping down on his leg. There's a scream as he pulls to get Hiccup into his legs and wings to protect him from the fire, and Hiccup passes out.
